Until I found myself discussing crocodiles during a pre-start meeting.

Over the years, some of the more unusual hazards I've had to assess have included:

• Crocodiles at remote water points

• Grave digging operations

• Aggressive buffalo roaming through work areas

• Wild horses taking over remote airstrips

• Protestors disrupting 5G installations during COVID

• Buildings where the needles outnumbered the workers

• Sites where theft, vandalism and equipment tampering were daily concerns

• Sites where only workers how can "Handle themselves" are assigned due to high violence areas.

• Toy guns on site, exciting the police and the TRG!

At some point, these weird and wonderful hazards stop being stories and simply become part of the daily pre-start.

• "Watch out for the crocodile."

• "Don't approach the buffalo."

• "Check the airstrip before landing."

• "Beaware of teh tweaker eyeing off your tools."

• "Keep your toys at home guys."

It's funny how things like "watch out for the crocodile" can become completely normal workplace instructions.

That's what I enjoy most about safety. Every workplace is different, and the biggest risks are often the ones you won't find in a template or textbook. They're discovered by getting out on site, talking to workers and understanding how the job is really done.
